Travelling on your own can be tough, as anyone who's tried smearing the suncream between their own shoulder blades knows only too well.

Single travellers, whether divorced, separated, widowed, unmarried, or simply taking time off from their partners, can get a raw deal from the hotel industry, with prices mostly based on two sharing a room.

One solution is to choose a tour operator that specialises in arranging escorted trips for solo travellers. Since everyone on the trip will be there on their own, there is a built-in level of companionship, as well as the option of having a room to yourself.

The best solo tour operators

Solos (solosholidays.co.uk) has the largest range of escorted holidays for singles, ranging from UK breaks and hotels in the Med to faraway destinations and activity holidays including tennis and golf – and everyone gets their own room without paying a supplement.

Two of many examples include five nights' B&B at the four-star Imperial Hotel Tramontano in Sorrento, departing 16 March and 20 April 2017, from £709pp, including flights, dinners and guided tours.

Or consider the new 10-night tour to South Korea, visiting Seoul, the 'Bamboo City' of Damyang, the DMZ (Demilitarised Zone), and the historic 'Museum Without Walls' city of Gyeongju. Departing on 2 April from £3,439pp, including flights, tours and breakfasts.

Solo cruise options

Cruising offers an ideal atmosphere in which to make friends in an environment that's especially secure for women travelling on their own. Many ships offer single cabins.

Fred Olsen (fredolsencruises.com) has one of the highest ratios of single cabins afloat; there are 76 on its newest ship, Balmoral, for example. There are usually lots of social activities and get-togethers, too.

Travelling alone in luxury

With more than one-fifth of clients travelling on their own, Saga (saga.co.uk/holidays), the over-50s holiday company, has a choice of exclusive holidays for singles.

A 13-night cultural and wildlife tour of Sri Lanka, for example, staying in four heritage properties in Colombo, sacred Kandy, Nuwara Eliya Hill Station and Galle, costs from £2,749pp including chauffeur pick-up and drop-off to and from home, most meals, and flights from Gatwick, Heathrow, Manchester, Glasgow or Birmingham. The best of the rest

Other companies specialising in singles holidays include: Just You (justyou.co.uk); Solitair (solitairhols.co.uk); Friendship Travel (friendshiptravel.com); One Traveller Holidays (onetraveller.co.uk); Travel One (travelone.co.uk); and Single with Kids (singlewithkids.co.uk).

Also, ask the Association of Independent Tour Operators (aito.com) for specialists that tend to attract a higher-than-average quota of singles.
